Designing Across Divides: Co-Creating Tools for Community Change was a transdisciplinary conference hosted at WVU from March 28-30, 2019. As the designer responsible for the event's digital platform, I ensured the website not only met the conference's needs but also aligned seamlessly with its vibrant brand identity. This project was a testament to the power of collaborative problem-solving and community-driven change, encapsulated in every aspect of the website's design.

The Designing Across Divides conference was a gathering that sought to address the pressing need for kindness, empathy, and effective communication in today's complex and divided world. In an era marked by confusion, rising bullying incidents, and divisive rhetoric, the conference aimed to promote values such as empathy, patience, and advocacy. It provided a platform for designers and communicators to come together and explore strategies to bridge divides, foster dialogue, and promote collaboration.

The conference recognized the importance of youth and college students in shaping the future, acknowledging leaders like the Parkland students and Greta Thunberg as inspirations for positive change. It emphasized the role of dialogue, deliberation, and collaboration as essential tools beyond mere protest.

Attendees engaged in discussions, shared experiences, and learned from wise speakers from West Virginia and across the country. The conference encouraged participants to reflect on their role in their communities and beyond, addressing injustices, misinformation, and the need for genuine human connection in a world often characterized by division and suspicion.

Ultimately, the Designing Across Divides conference aimed to inspire action, encourage empathy, and promote truth and collaboration over stereotypes and misinformation. It challenged participants to equip themselves with the tools needed to build bridges, foster understanding, and create positive change in their spheres of influence.

I had the pleasure of designing the shirts worn by the conference staff, a project that allowed me to merge the conference's brand identity with a sleek and easily identifiable look. Opting for a black and white palette, I ensured that the staff stood out while maintaining a cohesive and professional appearance. This design approach not only aligned with the conference's branding but also enhanced visibility and recognition for staff members among attendees. It was a rewarding experience showcasing my ability to combine branding elements with practicality, contributing to a polished and cohesive conference experience.

This collaborative project allowed us to explore a wide range of design mediums and formats, from diptychs to mugs, posters to interactive designs. The diversity of mediums sparked innovative approaches and ensured that our designs were not only visually striking but also functionally effective. This exploration of different formats added depth and richness to our creative output, creating a cohesive and engaging experience for both staff and attendees. The exchange of ideas and the collective effort put into the project created a unique bond among team members, highlighting the power of collaboration in achieving a common vision. It was a rewarding experience that not only showcased our individual talents but also emphasized the strength of teamwork and creative synergy.

My banner, displayed prominently in downtown Morgantown, served as a vibrant representation of our collaborative design efforts.
